Christians and Jews have been called “The People of the Book” because the Bible is central to our faith. As Christians we need to come face-to-face with God through the most direct record we have of God’s action in the midst of human life, that is, the Bible. John Wesley, founder of Methodism, built his faith and the community of believers on the foundation of scripture. As your pastor I believe that one of the most important things I can do is to open the Bible for your understanding. Therefore, I place Bible Study at the top of the list of programs in the church and challenge every member to open their Bibles and learn how to read and understand them. There are three important questions that we ask as we approach Scripture: What did the author want to communicate to the original readers? What does it tell us about God’s action, then and now? What do we do, now that we have heard the word? Bible Study is not a test of how much you have memorized nor a challenge to you to defend you belief. Bible Study is a time to probe the word and allow it to take possession of us. Whatever your level of experience with scripture, come and join us in probing, in asking questions, in learning to listen. Come with your Bible (your favorite translation, of course), your questions (we all have them) and your United Methodist attitude (Open Minds, Open Hearts, Open Doors). Each session of Bible Study will begin with a time of sharing concerns and prayer for our church, our world and our understanding of God’s Word. Join us on Wednesdays at 10:30 am or 7:00 pm.
